Assess the Value of the Chivalry Thesis in Understanding Gender Differences in Crime

Evaluate the estimation of the â€Å"chivalry thesis† in understanding sexual orientation contrasts in wrongdoing (21) The gallantry proposition is the place ladies are dealt with more permissively than men by the criminal equity framework. This is a result of paternalism and sexism with regards to male overwhelmed police and courts. Therefore, criminal insights think little of the genuine degree of female culpable. This is on the grounds that cops are less inclined to convict a lady of a less genuine wrongdoing since it is a lady accordingly are viewed as bound to simply get a warning.Graham and bowling (1995) did a self-report concentrate on 14-multi year olds and found that 55% of guys and 35% of females admitted to offenses over the most recent a year. This proposes guys carry out more wrongdoing than ladies by and large despite the fact that this self-report study depends on the more youthful ages of guys and females. Ladies are additionally bound to admit to their offens es, which closes this figure is an exact one and may propose that the male figure could likewise be much higher. Another investigation would be the adolescent ways of life overview (2000) where it was discovered that 11% females and 26% guys carried out genuine wrongdoings in the last twelve months. In general, ladies are believed to carry out less genuine violations like shoplifting and are uncommon for them to perpetrate a fierce wrongdoing. These insights show that guys are significantly increasingly fierce and are progressively equipped for carrying out progressively genuine wrongdoings contrasted with ladies. Flood page et every one of the (2000) found that one out of eleven self-announced offenses by ladies brought about arraignment though one out of seven accomplished for guys. This backs up what Allen (1987) says where ladies are less inclined to be given custodial sentences for indictable motoring offenses since they can work out of it and apologize sweetly. This could likewi se be the situation with regards to arraignment. Just as this, ladies are believed to be dealt with all the more permissively by law for instance, first guilty parties are half as liable to be given a sentence of quick detainment, where as though it was a man there is no uncertainty about it. Ladies are additionally observed by the police as a less genuine danger contrasted with men and they appear to profit by casual ways to deal with their offenses, for example, only an alert or warning.Pollak (1961) states that men(including cops) are defensive towards ladies and are less inclined to indict them along these lines, particularly on the off chance that it is a normal wrongdoing that a ladies apparently commits. Female litigants are dealt with all the more thoughtfully except if it is a wrongdoing against youngsters or a genuine wrongdoing that is viewed as a wrongdoing just men submit. On account of this defense towards ladies and courts giving them compassion this makes an invalid picture on wrongdoing rates.Another study would be the service of equity (2009) where 49% of females recorded of carrying out a wrongdoing got close to an alert however in 2007 this figure was 30% which suggests that this issue is deteriorating step by step. Then again, concentrates by Graham and Bowling and Youth way of life study, both saw that guys tended as engaged with progressively genuine offenses, which would clarify the higher extents of men among the sentenced and forewarned, additionally potential guys are almost certain than females to concede offenses in self-report studies.Box (1981) did a self-report concentrate in Britain and USA and found that measurements on sex and wrongdoing are genuinely precise. He found that ladies who perpetrate genuine offenses are not rewarded more well than men; just as this the lower pace of arraignments of females contrasted with oneself report studies might be on the grounds that the violations they confess to are less genuine and arenà ¢â‚¬â„¢t liable to go being investigated. Ladies wrongdoers additionally appear to be much bound to show lament, which may assist with clarifying why they are bound to get an alert as opposed to going to court rather than police and courts simply being viewed as protective.Buckle and Farrington (1984) found that men were twice as likely as ladies to shop lift despite the fact that official figures recommend people are equivalent. There could be numerous purposes behind this, for example, ladies could be significantly more obvious about it as they are viewed as increasingly honest, though guys hanging about perusing at things in a retail chain looks much progressively anomalous. Despite the fact that ladies perpetrate less genuine wrongdoing, the individuals who do are probably going to confront a genuine discipline contrasted with the guys that get indicted for the equivalent crime. This is on the grounds that it isn’t seen as an adequate route for a ladies to go about as it c hallenges their ladylike job of being mindful and adoring. Fierce wrongdoings are believed to be male violations since it is deductively demonstrated that guys are significantly progressively forceful contrasted with females due to their degrees of testosterone. So when ladies carry out a rough wrongdoing, the courts descend on them like a huge amount of blocks on account of how unnatural it is. Carlen (1997) says that’s sentences given to ladies depend on the female job and the way that a specific female satisfies this job and her character. For model on the off chance that she is a forceful ladies, she will presumably get a more extended sentence as it carefully opposes the female job, though if a ladies was exceptionally remorseful about what she had done, the courts are bound to give her compassion and a gentler sentence. On the off chance that ladies perpetrate a fierce wrongdoing they are viewed as doubly degenerate since they aren’t simply carrying out a wrongdoi ng they are opposing their job as a ladies. Farrington and Morris (1983) did an investigation, which was the condemning of 408 offenses of burglary in a magistrate’s court. They found that ladies were not rewarded any diversely when it came to wrongdoings people both submitted as they apparently ended up with comparative sentences regardless of what their conditions were. This proposes the valor proposition doesn’t consistently apply and it may not have any significant bearing by any stretch of the imagination. There apparently is an unmistakable gap in what is and isn’t a female wrongdoing. Wrongdoings like shoplifting aren’t as genuine, which implies that it may not generally end up in court in light of the fact that greater violations start things out which recommend taking a gander at measurements from feelings and court sentences isn’t an exact method of estimating the quantity of female criminals. This might be the reason the male insights are consistently higher on the grounds that they are normally the ones to carry out the more regrettable violations. In general I don’t think the valor proposal is substantial as it neglects to take a gander at the wrongdoings ladies submit that don’t get recorded as they get off with an alert. Because it isn’t a jail sentence, doesn’t imply that the police are being tolerant with ladies it just implies that ladies don’t frequently carry out as genuine wrongdoings, however they despite everything do perpetrate wrongdoing.

The most significant point of training is to get ready Essays The most significant point of training is to get ready Essay The most significant point of training is to get ready Essay The Ministry of Education distributes the consequences of the key business pointers of the study to furnish imminent understudies with ideal and practically identical information to help them in settling on educated course choices. 4,067 alumni from the here openly supported colleges were overviewed and the general reaction rate got was 73%. Since lion's share of the understudies had the option to secure positions inside a half year of their graduation, this implies they have what it takes required for the Job, which implies that schools have prepared their understudies well for the Job. I for one accept that the most Important point of instruction is to set one up for a vocation. For Singapore, a huge piece of training Is dedicated to guaranteeing that understudies have a general establishment of substance information and instruction additionally gives one pacific and social aptitudes. Right off the bat, a huge piece of instruction Is committed to guaranteeing that understudies have a general establishment of substance information. A normal understudy In Singapore goes through 6 years in Primary School, where she needs to get a handle on an establishment of English, Mother Tongue, Science and Mathematics. She at that point goes through four or five years in Secondary School expanding upon this establishment of information by spreading out into increasingly explicit zones of study, for example, Science and Mathematics. Why? The appropriate response can be found by taking a gander at the ventures required for the nation to work. In Singapore, we have ventures, for example, Medicine, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Sales, Engineering so on so forward. The same number of businesses require laborers gifted in Mathematics and additionally Science, it is important to concentrate regarding these matters in the instruction framework In request to deliver laborers who are fit for filling In these enterprises. The major theme of Death of a Salesman Essay Example

The significant topic of Death of a Salesman Paper The significant topic of Death of a Salesman, to the exclusion of everything else, is about Dreams and how they are the contributing element of every character view of the real world. The impression of reality that each character pictures is of there own most elevated goals throughout everyday life. The subject of dreams is the most significant topic of Death of a Salesman, and I will analyze and contrasting this specific topic and three different subjects too. These three topics are as per the following: Honesty, Time and Performance. In finishing my examination of every one of the four of these topics, I will gauge the significance of every one against the subject of Dreams, and thus, arrive at a strong resolution that without a doubt the topic of Dreams is the impetus of the Lohman familys bogus impression of reality itself. In looking at Death of a Salesman and a couple of its most significant topics, the subject of Dreams is positively the most convincing and fascinating of the four that I have chosen. Every individual from the Lohman family are on the whole survivors of their own bogus view of the real world. Their impression of the truth is so out of center that they are totally blinded by their own desires of being something that they are not, just as something that they can't achieve. This cynicism towards the Lohman family is legitimately advocated because of every one of the three of the Lohman mens absence of capacity to succeed and achieve their high goals. We will compose a custom exposition test on The significant topic of Death of a Salesman explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now We will compose a custom paper test on The significant topic of Death of a Salesman explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer We will compose a custom exposition test on The significant topic of Death of a Salesman explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer Passing of a Salesman is dream-like, and because of this topic, it is apparent that one of the fundamental characters, Willy Lohman, is inside a fantasy that is made of life itself. Through Willy, the subject of dreams will be appeared all through the whole play all the more so then whatever other topic that I will examine. The deepest desires of every one of the four individuals from the Lohman family emerge from the real world. By this understanding of their existence, it is anything but difficult to state that reality for the Lohman family is a long way from reality. The one individual from the Lohman family is a long way from reality. The one individual from the Lohman family that has any feeling of the truth is Willys spouse, Linda Lohman. Linda attempts to keep everything in context, and has a not too bad feeling of reality in any event, when her significant other drills the thought and his bogus fearlessness with respect to their monetary circumstance into her head. Their monetary circumstance is taken care of by Linda, yet Willy is the supplier of the family and wants to consistently promise Linda that he is bringing in increasingly then enough cash to help the whole family. This is a bogus acknowledgment of the Lohman familys money related circumstance, and Willys capacity to accommodate his family the manner in which he might want to will never be accomplished. Demise of a Salesman isn't just about dreams, yet about genuineness, time and execution. These three topics will be talked about in contrast with the topic of dreams in the accompanying two passages. Willy Lohman had a fantasy, however this fantasy depended on Dishonesty. His fantasies about being a notable and lofty sales rep were just dreams, not reality, and ought to have been recognized in that capacity. Shockingly, Willys fantasies about being an extraordinary man, just as being a well known and mainstream sales rep were stupid, yet not out of reach. Simultaneously, these mental self views were ridiculous and just false. What Willy presents to his own family about his mental self portrait is a bogus one, yet his most seasoned child Biff is contaminated by these bogus pictures of his dad. Thus, he accepts that he can achieve and have anything he might want, in any event, when he knows a specific thing is out of reach. Not exclusively is Willy unscrupulous, however his two children Biff and Happy are too. Biff is exploitative a few times during the play, and in one occasion he took, or as he guaranteed acquired a football from his school asserting that he would return it the following day at school. Willy has different sides to himself more often than not with regards to Biff. Now and again, Willy commends him saying how incredible he was and still is. Different occasions, he is grumbling and venting off steam by talking down at Biff and talking adversely of him. In light of Biffs incorrect conviction that all is well with the world that his fantasies have given him, the topic of deceptively becomes possibly the most important factor all the more so. This is the situation because of the way that this specific deceptively could never have occurred if just Biff comprehended what it intended to be a fair person. He never got an opportunity to because of his dads view of the real world and his bogus dreams. Willy dreams that one day Biff will become something significant, something that he could be pleased with. Shockingly, Biff is unequipped for accomplishing his dads elevated standards for him, and gets baffled on occasion thus. These fantasies are the reason for this specific deceitfulness filled situation, subsequently giving the topic of dreams the most significance and affirmation. Willy is the most unscrupulous of all characters in Death of a Salesman, and as such is prime subject of this topic. Willys goals and dreams gradually become littler and as he has developed more seasoned, he started to understand that he is carrying on an untruth, a fantasy. Because of this acknowledgment, he attempts to murder himself. Willy is additionally unsatisfied with his significant other Linda now and again, so he goes behind her back with a lady from Boston. He attempts to lie out of it, yet is ineffective. This is one more case of his untrustworthily. His fantasies of riches for his family, yet for himself, are extremely fantastical. These goals, bogus dreams, and untrustworthily were at last the passing of Willy Lohman.

The Enduring Wisdom in Jonathan Swifts Gullivers Travels and Alexande

The Enduring Wisdom in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Alexander Pope's An Essay on Man Whenever learned men of a past time resulted in these present circumstances present time of mechanical development, current man may be astonished at the perceptions these people of yesterday would make. More than three centuries prior, two such men - Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope - mentioned objective facts concerning their own time which have intriguing bits of knowledge to the present world. One thing Jonathan Swift may decide to elucidate upon is the establishment of political majority rule government. In Gulliver's Travels, he remarks, That every evident adherent will break their eggs at the helpful end: and which is the advantageous end, appears, as I would see it, to be left to each man's still, small voice, or if nothing else in the intensity of the central judge to decide. So in spite of the fact that he accepts that each man has the option to pick his own end - religion - he likewise acknowledges the authority of the boss officer - the ruler - to decide a state-wide reli gion. This thought is not really satisfactory to majority rule government advocates today. Alexander Pope, in his An Essay on Man, propounds the Incomparable Chain of Being hypothesis of presence and request: Huge Chain of Being! which from God started, Natures ethereal, human, holy messenger, man, Mammoth, fowl, fish, bug, what no eye can see, No glass can reach! from Infinite to thee, (EM 1102) Know thy own point: this sort, this due degree Of visual deficiency, shortcoming, Heaven offers on thee. (EM 1103) In this Extraordinary Chain of Being, each animal and thing possesses a spot - it appears to be sensible to accept that since there exists more than one interface in the human range, that various people involve distinctive social positions. Rulers, for exa... ...e the religion he rehearses in his own home. Pope and Swift may amaze present day society with their perspectives. They would be wary about tolerating or dismissing anything new - the two men exhibited cautious rationale in their thoughts, and not simply intense conviction. Some advanced convictions may require additional time before they would condemn: sci-fi, for instance. What's more, some they probably won't concur with yet would endure: different religions and political frameworks. Their thoughts regarding other innovations, for example, space investigation, may cause present day society re-to assess its explanations behind investigating the tremendous obscure. Coping With Thanatophobia or the Fear of Death

Coping With Thanatophobia or the Fear of Death Phobias Types Print Coping With Thanatophobia Fearing Death Is Natural But Thanatophobia Is Extreme By Chris Raymond Chris Raymond is an expert on funerals, grief, and end-of-life issues, as well as the former editor of the world’s most widely read magazine for funeral directors. Learn about our editorial policy Chris Raymond Updated on February 03, 2020 martin-dm / Vetta / Getty Images More in Phobias Types Causes Symptoms and Diagnosis Treatment Thanatophobia is an unusual or abnormal fear of personally dying and/or being dead that impacts the otherwise normal or healthy functioning of the person possessing this fear that might appear disproportionate to an outsider relative to the actual risk or threat the individual faces. While most people generally experience some level of discomfort or anxiety when confronted with the reality of human mortality in a dying/death situation such as in a hospital, home, or hospice during the dying process, or during a funeral, memorial, or interment service after a loved one dies, this uneasiness does not generally constitute thanatophobia (although this term is sometimes misapplied in these instances). Genuine thanatophobia must: Focus inwardly on you losing your life and doesnt involve worrying about the death of someone else. Contemplating or fearing an illness or accident taking the life of someone you love or care about such as your child, spouse/partner, a parent or friend, for instance, does not constitute thanatophobia.Impact your otherwise normal existence. Feeling uncomfortable and tongue-tied during a funeral or burial service because youre uncertain of the best thing to say to the bereaved is quite common, for example. On the other hand, refusing to leave your home or apartment to buy groceries or get your mail because youre afraid something might kill you could indicate a psychological condition that needs evaluation by a mental health professional. Is Fearing Dying and/or Death Normal? Regularly washing your hands to inhibit the spread of germs, or brushing your teeth regularly to prevent cavities and gum disease, are normal, healthy responses to genuine concerns. Harboring some fear of dying/death is generally beneficial because it can motivate you to improve your health through regular exercise, following a balanced diet, and overcoming an addiction. Moreover, a healthy concern about losing your life can also influence you to thoroughly consider the risks involved before undertaking a new physical activity or placing yourself in a potentially harmful or dangerous situation. But again, these sort of responses to a normal fear of dying/death do not generally rise to the level of thanatophobia. Causes As noted above, fearing the loss of your life is both natural and generally beneficial but typically doesnt rise to the level of thanatophobia unless your fear also affects your otherwise normal lifestyle and/or your response might appear disproportionate to an outsider relative to the actual risk or threat you face. Generally, any intense, irrational fear concerning an object or situation that rises to the level of a phobia is psychological in nature. Many people dislike finding a spider in their home, for example, but unless your fear of these creatures induces you to actually leave your home after discovering one crawling on a wall or forces you to avoid forests, parks, or other areas that harbor spiders at all costs, etc., then your fear of spiders generally doesnt constitute arachnophobia. While the causes of any phobia are complex, thanatophobia (and our fear of death in general) can arise from any/all of the following concerns people usually feel about their personal mortality, to name but a few: Fearing a sudden or prolonged death.Fearing a painful or gruesome death.Fearing the unknown or What lies beyond?Fearing for the well being of loved ones/survivors in the future.Fears rooted in past painful or negative life experiences. Again, the specific psychological cause of thanatophobia within any single individual is too complex and unique to identify. If you suspect you suffer from this particular phobia, then you should seek care from a qualified mental health professional. Necrophobia vs. Thanatophobia Necrophobia is different from thanatophobia. While both terms are often confused or misapplied to refer to the same fear, necrophobia refers to an intense, often irrational, fear people exhibit when confronted with dead things such as the remains of a deceased human being or animal, or an object we typically associate with death, such as a casket, coffin, cemetery, funeral home, tombstone, etc. Word Origin Our modern English word thanatophobia derives from two Greek words: Thanatos meant death in ancient Greece and originated from a much older Proto-Indo-European term meaning to disappear or die.Phobia derives from the Greek term phobos, which meant fear, panic fear, terror, outward show of fear; object of fear or terror. This word also derives from a word in the older Proto-Indo-European language for to run. When Your Fears About Dying Are Unhealthy

Difference between eastern and western courtyard house Essaypilot

A courtyard house basically refers to a large house made up of private open spaces that have a number of major parts of buildings based at the center of a courtyard (Carvalho, 2015). Courtyard houses were common in residential architecture all over the world and across the different centuries. Chinese courtyard houses The traditional courtyard buildings in China are referred to as Siheyuan which meant a courtyard at the center of four rooms. The siheyuan or the constitution of a courtyard lay the basis of a pattern or an outline for domestic architecture in Beijing. This spreads to temples, palaces, monasteries as well as additional buildings (Roth Clark, 2013). A Siheyuan with adequate space was normally occupied by one large family. The size of a single courtyard was an illustration of the owners social achievement. In fact, tax collection was based on this principle and which was coordinated and controlled by a citys planning authority. The physical layout of a siheyuan The ordinary layout of a siheyuan was four major buildings located along the east-west axis and north-south axis. The major room in that building was heading south and was located facing north. In addition, the north, western and eastern houses are linked by pathways. In the course of the Day, a courtyard was used to protect people from the scorching sunlight (Piker, 2010). At night it was also used to cool a house and this offered the appropriate ambiance that made people like the courtyard. There was an opposite house which was the building heading north. At the back of the building heading north was another backside house and it is here that permission was granted for constructing a two-storey building. An entrance gate was usually located in the eastern-southern side or commonly referred to as the wind corner as per the Chinese beliefs. Domus of Roman A Domus was basically owned by a rich middle class from ancient Rome. In most cases, Domus were built in the urban centers. Quite distinct from this one was an elite class Domus which had highly complex decorations, marble inlay works and had paintings on the walls. There are times when the whole wall was painted. Apart from having a Domus inside the town, a number of elites also owned Villas outside the city. The physical layout The layout of a Domus was made up of several rooms, gardens as well as indoor courtyards. There was an atrium which was said to be the core of a Domus. It had a vestibulum or at times known as an entrance pathway which headed to an atrium and had other rooms heading out of an atrium (Quagliarini et al, 2010). At the front of most of the city, houses were shops heading to a nearby street. A number of the buildings particularly those owned by the rich class were made of two distinct buildings linked by a walkway. Close to the atrium was a familys major rooms, a study, relatively smaller rooms as well as a triclinium or a dining room. There was an impluvium that was located at the center of the atrium where on the floor it was constructed a rectangular pool whose purpose was to get all the rainwater and then drain it away. Marble was used in the lining of this pool (Quagliarini et al, 2010). There were fauces or walkways all over the size of the rooms in between the rooms and the atrium. A kitchen is also referred to as a culina which was poorly lit and it was a small area used as a working station for the servants. An example of Domus is the House of the Faun (Carvalho, 2015). Introduction Lululemon is a company that has based itself around a value proposition of ethical production, healthy living and quality athletic gear designed to encourage and support an active lifestyle (Lululemon, 2014). Unfortunately for the company in the last year it has come under fire for a run of clothing that was far below their standard quality, and was in fact recalled for being too sheer (Peterson, 2013). This incident was exacerbated by CEO Chip Wilson’s comments that effectively blamed the issue on the body types of their customers (Forbes, 2014). This series of events served to isolate the brand from two of its critical strengths, namely the positive, encouraging push towards healthier living and the socially conscious production of high quality goods. In order to address this issue we are focusing our marketing plan on three specific areas: Focusing on emphasizing the realignment of our executive to reflect the values of the corporation, continuing to increase the production of micro-marketed goods, and increasing our client engagement by promoting yoga events in local communities in order to re-establish our position as a healthy, active and body-positive firm. Geography of the Worlds Largest Oil Spills

On April 20, 2010, a large oil spill began in the Gulf of Mexico after an explosion on a British Petroleum (BP) oil drilling rig there called Deepwater Horizon. In the weeks following the oil spill, the news was dominated by depictions of the spill and its growing size as oil continued to leak from an underwater well and pollute the Gulf of Mexicos waters. The spill harmed wildlife, damaged fisheries and severely hurt the overall economy of the Gulf region. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill was not fully contained until late July 2010 and throughout the duration of the spill it was estimated that 53,000 barrels of oil per day were leaked into the Gulf of Mexico. Financial Ratios of a Small Business - 1549 Words

Finance Information Imagine you are a small business owner. Determine the financial ratios that are important to the business. Compare your ratios with those that are important to a manager of a larger corporation. The ratios that would be most important to a business include: the current ratio, debt ratio and the return on assets. The current ratio is comparing the companys ability to pay its short term obligations. In general, the higher the number, the lower the risks that a firm will face from these challenges. This is important to a business, by helping executives to ensure that they have enough liquidity to pay creditors, employees and address other challenges. (Financial Ratios, 2011) The debt ratio is determining the total amounts of outstanding loans that a company owes to creditors. This number analyzes the firms ability to pay these obligations in comparison with its total assets. When this number is high, there are reduced risks of a potential default. For a business, this helps to determine if the company is taking on too much debt. (Financial Ratios, 2011) The return on assets is examining how effective the companys resources are being utilized to generate profits. For managers, this helps them to decide if a particular strategy is allowing the business to maximize its productivity. This is important, in determining if the firm will need to refocus their efforts on other areas in order to increase the total returns. Open Flow Based Server Load Balancing Gone Wild

Open Flow – Based Server Load Balancing Gone Wild Jiujian Ye, Paul Teran and Senthil Alagappan Ranganathan Abstract In today’s high-traffic internet, it is often desirable to have multiple servers representing a single logical destination server to share load. A general configuration consists of multiple servers behind a load-balancer which would determine which server would service a client’s request. Such hardware is expensive, congested, and is a single point of failure. In this paper we implement and evaluate an alternative load-balancing architecture using an OpenFlow switch connected to a NOX controller, which gains flexibility in policy, costs less, and has the potential to be more robust to failure with future generations of switches. However, the simple approach of installing separate rule for each client connection/microflow leads to huge number of rules in switches and heavy load on controller. So controller should exploit switch support for wildcard rules for more scalable solution that directs large aggregates of client traffic to server replicas. We implement these algo rithms on top of NOX OpenFlow controller and evaluate their effectiveness. Introduction There are many scenarios in today’s increasingly cloud-service based internet where a client sends a request to a URL, or logical server, and receives a response from one of potentially many servers acting as the logical server at the address. One example would be a Google web-server: after a client resolvesShow MoreRelatedCloud Computing Security67046 Words   |  269 Pagessecurity challenges becomes crucial to business development. Learning a Foreign Language Free Essays

With the development of the world and the raising level of education, learning a foreign language has become a compulsory subject for every student. At the same time, the problem of learning foreign languages is extremely crucial. Foreign languages are socially demanded especially at the present time when the progress in science and technology has led to an explosion of education and has contributed to an overflow of information. We will write a custom essay sample on Learning a Foreign Language or any similar topic only for you Order Now Foreign languages are needed as the main and most efficient means of information exchange of the people of our planet. A second language can be applied not only to science and technology, and sometimes it also used in people’s daily life. We all know that, whether you travel or business to another country, it will make your trip more relaxed and enjoyable that if you know the local language. Of course, this is just a basic purpose of learning a foreign language. I interviewed one of my friends about this topic, who called Flo and is a native English speaker and have been learning German for four years. I interviewed her about her experiences and viewpoints of learning a foreign language from many aspects, fortunately, I got some now ideas. There are many reasons to learn a foreign language, from studying and working in another country to communicating with foreigners, through travel, emigration and maybe just interest. When I asked Flo what is her purpose of learning German, she said that she had a trip in Germany when she was a child. At that time, she felt that German is a beautiful language, its pronunciation, and the way people speak it were deeply attracted her. So she began to learn German when she was in high school, and now, her major is German Business, so the purpose for her is changed. She said it is different from before when she studied German in high school, she studies German here is for learning the economic situation in Germany and also for looking for a career in Germany after graduation. As can be seen, reasons of learning a foreign language are diverse. Sometimes you began to learn a foreign language just because it sounds good to you when it is spoken, and sometimes the information about the subject you chose s published mainly in a foreign language. Learning that language will make it easier to get the material you need. Learning a foreign language is useful but not easy. Its grammar, pronunciation, writing and vocabulary are always plagued language learners, they are totally different from your mother tongue, so there are a big deal of difficulties have to face for language learners. My interviewee said that the first big d ifficult she met is grammar. German grammar is more complex than English grammar, it has a lot of the old rules need to keep in mind, and it is less flexible than English. Although in some aspects, these two languages are similar, for example, the subordinate clause. But it is still not easy to master German completely for her. What’s more, the pronunciation is also a big problem for Flo. She showed me that in German letters, in addition to the A(a),O(o),U(u) and? , other letters written look not much different from English letters, but the pronunciations are totally different, she always confuse the pronunciation of two languages. Obviously, learning a foreign language is not that easy, we need to learn its grammar, writing, pronunciation and vocabulary, or even need to known about the culture and history of the country that speaks this language. This is the only way to fully grasp a foreign language. When we understand the purpose of learning a foreign language and what difficulties we will face when we study this language, the most important thing next is how to learn a new language. Because as long as you have a correct language learning method, you can quickly, completely and high efficiently master a language without fool’s errands. Flo told me that, at the beginning of learning German, she didn’t know how to learn it, just blind to see some German movies and news on TV, so during that time, her German level of progress is very slow. Though classroom learning, she began to know some correct methods of learning a new language. The best way for her is using the internet resources after classes, as we all know that the resource on the Internet is infinite, most of the time, we can get anything we want from the Internet, especially for language study, we can find some language learning audios, videos, articles and even online courses. So making good use of network resources have a negligible effect on people when they are studying a foreign language. And we cannot ignore that, at the same time, the way to learn a language is to practice speaking it as often as possible. Language is diverse. In people’s day-to-day conversation, we prefer to speak informal language with some slangs, it makes people communicate simple and not binding. Language is a collective human creation, reflecting human nature, how we conceptualize reality, how we relate to one another. Said by STEVEN PINKER, the author of The Language Instinct. Language is for the exchange of ideas, for the communication, so language is the most crucial tool for people to communicate, but only one language is not enough, form my point of view, learning a foreign language is necessary if you want to know more about the world. As long as you want to learn a new language, learning foreign languages should be fun. How to cite Learning a Foreign Language, Essay examples

Value of Friendship free essay sample

Everyone places value on something for very different reasons. The most significant thing is what our values are and the importance we give to those values. So many things that we think have so much value, really have transient value, and we overlook the things of true and lasting importance. We should always place great value on what is real and genuine. Mostly everyone places great value on life. So what’s the value of life? I believe the value of life consists of many qualities. To me, the main value of life is friendship. Friendships bond the world together by the tie of promises and morality between people. It causes the world to connect in so many diverse ways it is unbelievable. For example, long lasting friendships can be created by just meeting in a coffee shop or at a grocery store. The connection with another can give you the ability to see yourself as others see you, and only then you would know how exceptionally special you are. Life is filled and fortified with friendships, from the first friendships with your parents and family, to your childhood friends, and even teachers. The meaningful outcome of friendship made me realize different goals in my life and profoundly shaped me into who I am today. There’s always that one friend that surpasses every other person you’ve ever met in your life. The person who has constantly believed in you with all their heart and soul. The one who can lift your spirits by just saying a few simple words and being there through tenacious struggles that life hurls at you. Typically, that one friend is called your best friend. I would say I have the greatest friend of all time. I know its cliche, but she’s the one person that has made the biggest difference in my life. She’s the person that gave me a whole new outlook on life which caused me to make wise decisions for myself and not others. The effect of my best friend has led me to meaningful aspirations and the ambition to always be the best I can be without losing who I am. So basically, this implicates how friendships benefit the world and creates a humbling connection that bonds people together and can sometimes make you reevaluate life. I believe friends can change who you are for the better, whether negatively or positively, the people you surround yourself with have an evocative influence on where your life takes you. A friend can be one of the most goal aspiring and motivational person that encourages you to be a better person. My best friend now, impacted my life in such a positive way that I chose to change who I am. Specifically, I believe my best friend got me to where I am today. I was a hopeless person that was indecisive of whether to do bad actions or to lose my former friend that never really cared about the true meaning of our friendship. My former friend, which I surrounded myself with was known for the bad habit of shoplifting and theft. I’ve known this girl ever since the third grade and I was great friends with her ever since the incident. Knowing right from wrong, I made the most idiotic and regretful decision of my life, I chose to go in the wrong direction by choosing not to lose her as a friend, and to shoplift. During my friendship with my former friend, our â€Å"hanging out† consisted of going to the mall to rip the tags off items and stuff them in our purses until our purses were too full to fit anything else. The adrenaline of walking through the exits of a store without getting caught really gave my former friend and I a rush. This addicting, yet horrible habit, got the best of me and led me to getting caught at a local store. I had to call my parents and pay a shoplifting fine of $250. Unfortunately, by associating myself with shoplifting, I destroyed my life because of my actions. I’m not putting all the blame on my former friend because, it was my choice to shoplift and I made the decision that led to the outcome of my stupendous actions. I take all the blame for the brainless choices I made. It was my fault that I surrounded myself with a negative person most of my life. One of the worse things was that my family and former friends at school, assumed I was going to steal their things and they kept my mistake in the back of their mind for years. I was left trying to find a way for my family and friends at school to put their trust in me and realize I transformed into a whole different person and I’ve honestly never felt better. Although, the incident led to everyone losing trust in me, the only person who still believed in me was my best friend of four years. She was the only person that still had faith in me and was there for me when no one else was. She was always my number one supporter and ally. My best friend has literally made the biggest difference in my life. I owe it all to her that I’ve developed into a person with goals and ambitions to always improve as a person. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t have my best friend. I realized that by stepping away from pessimistic people and bad actions, I have become a more structured and overall better person. I honestly believe the greatest thing in life is friendship. The moral importance of friendship is that you bond and connect with other people and that kind of relationship can make an enormous impact on your life. Although, it’s rare to find a friendship that is long lasting, life changing, and true, that doesn’t mean that it won’t be meaningful or genuine. One of my favorite quotes is To the world you are someone, but to someone you are the world. By a random woman named Lisa. This quote really explains how friendship and love isn’t just one sided. We are all important and we all deserve the gift of a true friend that loves you for who you are and brings out the very best of you. We always see the worst in ourselves, that’s why we need someone to prove us wrong. Friendship is the value of life.

Genocide and Americans Actions Essay Example For Students

Genocide and Americans Actions Essay Opinion 1: Lead the World in the Fight to Stop Genocide Military: According to the Genocide Convention signed and put into effect by the U.N December 9. 1948. Anyone committing genocide, whether constitutionally responsible rulers, public officials, or private individuals will be punished. Genocide is defined as the killing of members in a group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, imposing measures intended to prevent birth, or forcibly transferring children of that group to another group. This is exactly what is taking place in Darfur, Sudan. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates as many as 50,000 people have been killed and about 1 million internally relocated. In addition roughly 170,000 refugees have fled to eastern Chad. These actions led to Secretary of State Colin Powell along with President Bush to officially declare the crisis a genocide. The U.N still has not recognized the crimes committed in Darfur as a Genocide. However in September 2004 the Security Council passed Resolution 1564 which threatens sanction against the Sudanese government if it does not stop attacks by the Arab Sudanese militias on black Sudanese villagers in the Darfur region. Sudanese officials have largely dismissed it, accusing the United States, for example of trying to overthrow an Arab government. They obviously dont fear that sanction on their oil exports of some 320,000 barrels per day that will be imposed. This shows Sudanese resolve, they are willing to forfeit the economic status in order to eliminate these African tribes. As the worlds last superpower we have an obligation to protect those nearing extinction using any means necessary. We have proven political and economic force is useless, now it is time for physical military force to step in. We have made a promise to end genocide, now is the time to act. We have an obligation to use our forces in order to protect these refuges at easy. .

He came home drunk and picked up a bill-perhaps for Toms clothing or schoolbooks-and hed fly into rage.(Spoto, 18). Edwina, on the other hand, revered refinement and the good manners of Southern gentry. (Barrons Book Notes, 2). Tennessee adored Rose immensely and were close as they could be. The Glass Menagerie is based on a mother and her two children who live in a dream world away from society. Williams play is drawn heavily upon his family life and experiences; they are very much parallel to the events that occur i n Williams life. Tom tries to support his mother and sister by working in a shoe factory even though he dreams to become a poet. His mother disapproved of him writing as well as his father, Despite Toms being published, Cornelius persisted in his belief that his son was wasting his time and should be thinking of a more practical way of making a living.(Leverich, 82). Tennesse felt so doleful and devastatingly miserable that he did not know another way of escaping reality but to write, At the typewriter he transformed the confusion, the bitterness, the longings into poems, and for a time he cracked out a diary in which he recorded little anecdotes about St. Louis street life.(Spoto, 20). Williamss char acter, in like manner, felt that same emptiness, HeTom is a poet by nature and feels that his environment is destroying his creative abilities.(Cliff Notes, 9). Amanda Wingfield mirror images Williamss mother, Edwina Dakin Williams. Both of these women live in the past; Amanda and Edwina were both southern belles who still dream of their gentlemen callers from the past. (Cliff Notes). Also, Amanda Wingfield is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution just like Williams mother was, In 1905, Edwina was invited to join the Columbus Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and to her at the time, as it would be all her life, this was a singular honor.(Leverich, 25). Amanda realizes that Laura does not have any interaction with the public and needs to procure some sort of skill so that she will be able to support herself in the future, so she enrolls Laura in a business school just as Edwina did for Rose, Her mother, soon after, enrolled her at the Rubicam Busines s College, hoping she would learn to be a stenographer, but that did not turn out well either, but she could sustain neither the pressure nor the group contact.(Spoto, 20). But even with the persisting mothers, both Laura and Rose drop out of the class because they are shy, and all the dates you were absent until they decided that you had dropped out of school.(Williams, 40). Williams also portrayed Laura as being quiet and shy just like Rose. Rose lived in her own world, just like Laura. Rose became a model for Laura when Williams was writing this play. Laura would rather have collected tiny glass animals rather than correlating with other people. Rose and Laura are similar that their gentlemen caller has the same name, Jim OConnor. Laura is so shy that when she finds out who the gentlemen caller is she repudiates to join dinner, There was a Jim OConnor we both knew in high schoolif that is the one that Tom is bringing to dinner-youll have to excuse me, I wont come to the table.(Wi lliams, 89). When Jim does come to eat dinner at the Wingfields house, he is the only character in the play that brings reality to them, Since Laura lives in a world of illusion and dream, Jim, as the ordinary person, seems to Laura to be wonderful and exceptional. He is so different from her own world that he appears to be the knight in shining armor.(Cliff Notes, 32). Roses retreat into her own dream world caused her to become emotionally fragile just as Laura. She not only became emotionally fragile, but self-destructive as well; Rose blamed Cornelius of trying to get her in bed which might have added to her mental deterioration. Tennessee is encumbered by Roses illness; he wants to pursue his career of writing, but he feels responsible for his family. In the play, Tom feels the need to leave his mother and sister, Dont think about us, a mother deserted, an unmarried sister whos crippled and has no job! Dont let anything interfere with your selfish pleasure! Just go!(Williams, 13 6). Amanda construes to Tom that she knows he wants to leave to supervene his dream of becoming a writer, but that he should at least be responsible enough to take care of his family until Laura is well taken care of in the future, I mean that as soon as Laura has got somebody to take care of her, married, a home of her own, independent-why, then youll be free to go wherever you please, on land, on sea, whichever way the wind blows you! But until that time youve got to look out for your sister.(Williams, 65). Amanda requisites Tom to bring home a gentlemen caller in order so that he can leave soon, and that she can be rest assured that her daughter will be well provided. The apartment talked about in The Glass Menagerie is identical to the one that the Williams relocated to in St. Louis, An ugly city apartment building of mustard-colored brick, since demolished, it became the tenement of The Glass Menagerie(Leverich, 79). The apartment is cramped and dark, almost like a jail cell(Ba rrons Book Notes). Laura and Tom do not like the dismal atmosphere of the apartment, The new apartment had only two small windows, in the front and in the rear rooms, and a fire escape blocked the smoky light from a back alley.(Spoto, 16). Tom uses the fire escape as a break from the real world, As he climbs the few steps to the fire escape landing light steals up insideAt last he find the key, but just as he is about to insert it, it slips from his fingers. They have all of the gravity of the star concentrated into that point. Black holes are difficult to see because they cannot be seen. They cannot be seen because they are spinning faster than the speed of light and light cannot escape from them. They can be compared to a giant vacuum cleaner, they suck in anything that gets near them. Where do black holes come from? Black holes are formed when giant stars run out of fuel and are overwhelmed by their own gravity. When this happens they cannot keep from collapsing. After stars collapse, they start rotating and as they are spinning, their gravity becomes stronger causing them to shrink. As the object becomes smaller, it starts spinning faster and faster. Using a small black marble as an example of the size that Earth would become if it collapsed and became a black hole, Todd R. Lauer, of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories said, " Black holes are very messy eaters. If you took that marble to an 'all-you-can-eat buffet' allowing it to consume all the matter around it, the feeding frenzy would produce as much radiation as the Sun." Research indicates that black holes may have existed at the beginning of time. Black holes are so dense that not even light can escape. Looking towards a black hole, the stars behind it would appear out of place because black holes distort light. The immense gravitational pull of black holes is thought to be responsible for the swirling masses of stars in spiral galaxies throughout the universe. Gravity in a black hole should be able to pack stars in so tight that the intensity of the stars' light would drastically increase towards the center of gravity. Everything falling into a bla! ck hole loses its identity, you couldn't tell if it were a satellite or a T.V. set that fell in. Dr. Fred Chromey of Vassar College in New York said, " Black holes are the easiest way to explain some of the strange things that are going on in some of the galaxies." Research indicates that if a black hole formed, it would eventually evaporate but it would take millions of years. Earth's escape velocity, the speed it takes to escape the pull of gravity, is 11 kilometers per second. The escape velocity of a black hole is 300,000 kilometers per second, which is faster than the speed of light. If Earth's diameter shrank to less than 1 centimeter, the escape velocity would exceed the sped of light, the escape velocity of a black hole. Anything can become a black hole if you compress it enough. How are black holes located? Black holes technically can't be seen, but they give off many clues to their location. Signs of many black holes have been located during normal observation of other space objects. Abnormally high levels of X-rays and gamma rays are the most common clues, but other exotic energy sources are also good clues. Astronomers have also located black holes by studying the speeds of swirling galaxies. If large objects are moving at very high speeds astronomers usually try to track their orbits and try to locate a central object that could be the source of the gravity. Another clue to the location of black holes are masers. Masers are the cosmic relatives of lasers. They are water molecules orbiting black holes that capture and amplify radiation and send it back out into space. Masers are usually located in the accretion disk, the swirling cloud of gases above a black hole. Some masers have been clocked traveling over 650 miles per second. Many types of equipment are used to locate black holes. One type of equipment is called the Baseline Array. The

English - Essay Example The government has been steadfast in fighting the various forms of crimes. Although, there have been some notable achievements in this campaign, it is clear that a lot have to be done to bring the vice to the lowest levels. Apparently, a number of issues are allegedly caused by the increased crime rates. These problems includes increased public burden, increased expenses and cost to the society, the need to involve so many parties to resolve the vice, and the need to enact and modify existing laws to accommodate new form of crimes. Records show that crime has been around for a long time now. It is also evident that criminal activities have caused lot of pain and problems to the society. A Lot of resources are used every year to fight this battle. However, there is need to double the efforts since the crimes rates are generally considered quite high. This has caused concern to many people since such levels of violence being experienced are a threat to the stability of the society. The major crimes that are causing chaos include terrorism, theft, violence, rape, fraud, trading illegal drugs among many others (Osofsky, 2005). These criminal activities have left tremendous suffering to the community. Many people end up in jail when they are caught committing felony, while others have been killed in these unfortunate circumstances (Osofsky, 2005). The major concern is that the victims are mostly the innocent people in the community. Lots of money have been lost, stolen or destroyed when these criminal activities take place. This lead to negative effect to the economy of the country while at the same time destroying peoples’ financial status and their source of income. Government spends quite an amount on both human and material recourses to fight the vice, which would otherwise be channeled into other productive areas such as improving infrastructure and other beneficial sectors. Inadequate measures by the responsible parties have perpetrated the criminal act ivities in the society. Police officers, lawyers, and human rights organizations all have a key role in ensuring that there is an acceptable level of peace in the community. They have a responsibility in ensuring that every individual in the community is safe. However, they have in many cases they have failed to honor their duties by performing below the expected standards. In some instances, there have been claims where police officers have failed to respond on time to a distress call from crime victims only to appear when the damage already done. Some criminal investigations have been unsatisfactorily been carried out while others remain pending and closed cases (Allen, 2000). The Human Rights Organizations have also been found insufficient in carrying out their duties. They are allegedly biased in offering their services to the victims. The poor people in the community are not fully represented in the organizations. Judicial system on the other hand has been accused of being corr upt. These individuals are â€Å"bought† to rule cases in favor of the guilty parties (Regoli, 2009). The policies and legislations that are meant to regulate crime rates have been found to be highly ineffective. More often than not, criminals manage to evade justice by taking advantage of loopholes in the judicial system that is brought about by the existence of ineffective legislations. Most of these legislations were enacted a long time ago. Today’s crimes have changed becoming more sophisticated in the process (Allen, 2000).
